Road closures are planned for Waipio Valley Road next month as survey work begins in preparation for eventual safety improvements along the treacherous road.

According to a Tuesday statement by the Hawaii County Department of Public Works, surveyors from Control Point Surveying will be assessing the conditions of the road between the Waipio Valley Lookout and the Waipio Beach Access Road between March 4 and March 24. Work will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. seven days a week.

Survey crews will assess the area’s topography using “advanced techniques,” including climbing and rappelling up and down the valley cliff faces.

Temporary road closures are therefore planned to ensure the surveyors’ safety. Closures are anticipated to only last between five and 10 minutes at a time, and will only occur when surveyors are transitioning between one section of cliff face to the next. Flaggers at both ends of the road will signal when traffic must halt or resume.

For any inquiries or concerns related to the surveying work, please contact Preston Vierra, DPW Engineering Project Manager at 808-961-8787.
